The math question is called a "skill-testing question", which is fairly standard for contests. It's something I've seen all my life in various contests and even lotteries. I believe it is a legal thing to cause a contest or lottery to be legally differentiated from gambling. I.e., there is a small amount of skill involved, which makes it not a pure game of chance.

I thought this is commonplace. However, I've spent my life in Canada, so maybe it is commonplace in Canada and not elsewhere, and I just didn't have the experience to know that it is only in Canada.
