SOLVED:

Duh, I had been using a stand-alone USB cable, plugging it directly from the computer to the iLiad.

Today I tried the power/USB adapter that came with the iLiad (which I had been using only for charging) and when I plugged the USB cable into the adapter and the PC, everything worked perfectly.

Moral of the story: Use the provided power/USB adapter to connect the iLiad to the PC.
