Ah, I see. When creating a Kindle book Amazon recommends to use color images at 300 ppi resolution with highest quality setting possible as long as each picture be less than 5mb. Only the cover image is allowed to completely fill the screen, the other images are a maximum of the width of screen minus margins, height depending on the width. That is if the picture is big enough. It also should be at least 600 px wide by at least 800 px high.
In your case the picture is simply too small by Amazon's standard. Try making it bigger - sounds like a lot bigger won't hurt. Just make it 1006 x 1400 for double resolution - that should go without hurting the IQ any. Load on both old K3 and new Kindle Basic - should look the same.
