Do people actually prefer huge gaps between words over hyphenation of the last word in the line? To me it just seems to throw off the balance and forces me out of the story. I can handle hyphenation of a word at the end without skipping a beat, but gaps annoy me.
Overdoing it on the hyphens though is probably not a good idea. Unless the word needs hyphenation, shouldn't it be left to the software to "flow" the text on the screen?
