You do not need an SD card. Built-in memory is good for 200+ books. The card also drains battery power, shortening your battery time.
The Reader can directly access books from the SD card, but in this case the first loading and the first font size change takes some time (10 - 60 seconds) due to formatting. If you transfer with the eBook Library software, the formatting is done on your PC (much faster).
Too many books on the SD card will result in very slow performance when navigating between books on the reader.
I see no reason using an SD card at all.
