With Windows or Apple, Corporate sets the variation limits. It seems that 3rd party stuff is what causes most issues.

Yup. The thing is, Linux distributions are more like different operating systems than just one fragmented OS.
Remember folks, Linux is a kernel, not an operating system.
Personally I think variation is a good thing. People can choose the OS that they want instead of choosing one that someone else decided was perfect for everyone.
