The iPod/iTunes bought songs is not that great either comparing it to iPods/songs per iPod
I used the 500 for several months and I never bought a book from Sony outside of the 50$ I got for free with the cc deal and now with the 700 I do not expect to buy from them either. Hard to see what would make me buy from them and not from BoB or Fictionwise.
My experience with ebooks from Amazon - pre Kindle, though I do not expect them to treat Kindle owners better if push comes to shove - made me treat any drm-e that I cannot convert as disposable, so I ain't spending more than 3-4$ on such and even then I would do it rarely. Better buy print, unless the price difference is truly large
