Did you make a purchase yet? I will answer some of your questions. I used to have a Kobo HD, but I sold it in favor of a Kindle Fire HD 6 tablet. I also use a Nexus 7 (2013 version) but prefer to read on the HD 6.

Not to me. Tablet lighting is very adjustable. There is an app called Screen Dim which many people find useful.

Sorry, I never tried doing that on the Aura HD. But tablet screens are going to be much faster and easier, zooming in and out.

For epub reading, yes it was fine. Many font sizes to choose from. I never tested a PDF or manga.

To me, not at all.

I find I prefer reading on my 6" tablet for many reasons.
1. screen size. I found the 7" tablet screen too big and awkward for me to enjoy reading on. Even the screen on the Aura HD was a bit large for my taste.
2. I found that the blacks were blacker than on the Aura HD.
3. high resolution (254 ppi) Even small font sizes look fantastic on this screen.
If you don't want to go with an Amazon device, I highly recommend the 2013 Nexus 7. It has better resolution than the HD 6 and is faster. You really can't go wrong with that one.
