Red, if you are uploading to Apple iBookstore (or if you are using Direct2Digital as an aggregator), your book must pass Epubcheck. As others have noted, Flight Crew does not suffice.
In my experience, Amazon KDP is not nearly so fussy. Early one, I got dozens of errors in Epubcheck because I was using
name= instead of
id= in my html. I began hacking together web pages in 1992; if it worked, I was happy with it, so I missed twenty years of progress in html. Just as they worked as web pages, my "deprecated" html worked just fine on the KDP (formerly called DTP). I have since pulled up my socks and got on board with the big kids.
I still occasionally get the Epubcheck error, and if it mystifies me entirely, I post it here, and always someone has been kind enough to point me in the right direction.
