It's suspicious that this happened immediately after installing a new battery. Are you CERTAIN that it's correctly installed?
Also, what do you mean by "my kindle dx battery had recently died"? Normally they just need charging more & more frequently. Is it possible that this fault was already there and that it wasn't the battery after all?
If you can ever get it to stay on long enough I'd suggest trying a factory reset.
You may just have a dead DX though. I had one of those, bought one from ebay with a broken screen, kept the whole front panel from mine & the rest from that & I have a good DX again. A warning if you do go that route; make sure that it's de-registered before you buy it or you might not be able to register it in your name.
