For George R. R. Martin's A Dance with Dragons I had to wait 18-24 months for the price to come down to a reasonable level. Two years after that and the price is now down to a very reasonable $4.99.

You can check out the price history for Amazon books at http://camelcamelcamel.com/ , however they don't track kindle prices.

Generally the discount takes hold about the same time the paperback hits the market.
