I took it apart for a number of reasons, not just to apply the grip paint. I had to remove the paint to get it working again.You are right, the IR path needs to be unobstructed for the touchscreen to work properly. The shiny black plastic piece inside the bezel is IR transmissive and guides the IR beams from the emitters across the face of the screen to the receivers on the opposite side. The scalloped edges of the IR plastic need to be clean, as that is what the emitters shine into. Some people have found some tape that was interfering with the IR path. If the black plastic is clear and properly aligned tight to the screen, it should work.
