Tiles will appear when you use them. If you dismiss tiles with a long press, (except Sync), they go away until you use that feature again. You should be able to get rid of previews by going into your Syncing settings and turning off Kobo Notifications. Turn off automatic syncing while you're there.
The Sync tile you can dismiss using the Kobo Utilities plugin.
To put a collection tile on your homepage, go into that collection, choose Manage, then Save, and it will appear.
Future books added/read may then push these tiles off your homepage as they appear. Fear not - they're not gone, they're just offscreen. Dismiss those new book tiles, and your preferred tiles will reappear.
