I am with Jon on this one, do not ever use MOBI.
Or, if you really have a desperate need for MOBI, I assume because you have the Original Kindle* then you probably don't have a device that does read AZW3, so you can stay with MOBI on account of AZW3 being precisely as useful as a hex dump... in which case we can assume Jon's advice is inapplicable. He isn't advising anyone to convert to formats they can't use.
(* -- Okay, the Kindle 2 or DX/G would be equally applicable.)

One example where old mobi can be a neater fit than KF8: I removed the DRM from a KPW1 version of a book and transfered it directly to my Android Kindle app without any further format conversion. The margins ended up different (larger) than any of the old mobi files sideloaded to Kindle app, even different than the DRMed version directly from Amazon of the same book (which had .prc as file extension). The App can read KF8 just fine. And maybe it would have worked if I had removed the DRM from the Kindle for PC version instead of the PW version - not sure if they are identical.
Another thing can be hard coded fonts, hard coded line height and such that will be stripped automatically when going to old mobi.
