There are plenty of low resolution 7" tablets out there, with resolutions of 800x480 (133ppi), and these may well have been the subject of the reviews you mention.

A 7" 1280x800 (216ppi) screen is capable of providing good clean text rendering and is considered "retina" class at or over 16 inches viewing distance (which is about the closest viewing distance I ever read at).

I use a 1280x800 7" tablet daily and there is nothing at all blurry or fuzzy about the text rendering (though I do prefer reading on my eink device).
