^Are you mixing The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer by Siddhartha Mukherjee with Interpreter of Maladies by Lahiri Jhumpa?
I'm curious because the Jhumpa title has been on my to read list forever, but your description sounds like the Mukherjee title.
The Cellist of Sarajevo was a great read for me.
