You don't know, you think. And I think the majority of people are serenely confident that they will never need it, and thus it isn't even a tiny bit of future-proofing. That is assuming they have ever thought about the issue.

There is nothing wrong with your wanting a specialty device. (Although I note that my Kindle Touch does all of that besides the apps and the OPDS, and the OPDS is available with KOReader.)

But I really do think you are projecting your desires onto others, hence why you are arguing in favor of SD slots...
