I think you are not going to regret getting a Kindle. Just ignore that Amazon made it, if that will make you feel better. Built quality is very good - and the devices are very functional.
You should give it a try with a Kindle. There is little risk if you order from Amazon as you can just send it back within 30 days if you are not happy for some reason.
