• Layer Mask Examples Using Magic Wand (the 1st one with putting the starfish on the boat seems to be basically what you want)
• Compositing Photos has a few more advanced tricks
• Different Ways to Remove a Background
• Layer Masks (a sort of basic "what can you do with them", which kind of shows how it's generally more flexible to use masks instead of just erasing stuff directly from the image)

Also, The League of Movable Type has some very nice free fonts with generous open usage licenses, designed by mostly professional typographers in their spare time, if you're interested.
