Note that Bjarne Sjoustrup designed the C++ language.
The original implementation was a translator that converted C++ to C, to be compiled by the cc compiler on the Unix systems where it originated. C++ compilers that compiled to native machine code came later.
(He's a Managing Director in the Technology department at Morgan Stanley these days, and a Visiting Professor in Computer Science at Columbia University, and a Distinguished Research Professor in Computer Science at Texas A&M University.)
