Well I tried that, but 5.4.5 wasn't there for download any more. I've used that trick since the first Kindle, so I tried that first. Evidently I was trying to download it during a bit of a down for AWS, so it wasn't there last night.

EDIT²: FWIW, I have no idea of how the 'footnote bug' is supposed to present itself, but I'm currently reading stuff with a crapload of footnotes without issues on a PW2 on 5.4.5.1.
