Besides, vm are way slower, in principle, cause they have to emulate a processor. Cygwin or gow, they use unix command, but compiled natively for Windows environment.
Your previous point quite makes sense however: they're going to use the command line anyway, so they could just use cmd to launch "ssh kindle".
However, I think until they're "at home" they'd prefer sticking with their (Windows) way to do things. And using putty isn't that complex when you have setup your connection. You open putty, double click on your "Kindle" entry and you're in.
You can even make an icon that connects directly to it, if you like.
That's two different philosophies. I use both, but in my experience, those who knows sufficiently well only one of them, will tend to be VERY reluctant to change their status.
