That's like avoiding using the bycicle until you can't afford a motorbike (not referring to their respective power, however). If you have alternatives, you go with what you like the most. If you haven't...
That said, cygwin (and gow) are useful alternatives for experienced (unix) people who are forced to use windows and try to cope as they can.
