Birds are immune to the effect of capsaicin - the chemical that makes chili peppers hot.
The peppers evolved to be eaten by birds, because the birds have very quick metabolism and by eating peppers they would spread the un-digested seeds in their droppings.
The mammals have better digestive system and the seeds do not survive the passage.
