Yes, even Windows has an 'etc/hosts' file - not at the root of the file system ('/') but somewhere under the system32 sub-tree if I recall correctly.

Google knows everything (except what page of what book your reading - Amazon tracks that).
I usually use ~/.ssh/config, personally.
Surely PuTTY must have some sort of equivalent settings data...
