I still have and use a SideKick. That's my prefer cellphone when I'm not in USA. Low profile, access to Android Market and physical keyboard.
Old? Yes. But for texting is more than enough. I can even get calls over wifi if needed, even Internationally.
I also have a Motorola Rzr. Yes, I use abbreviations when texting but I get weeks of battery life with it on standby. That's my 2nd choice when traveling out of USA.
