Mine was like that til a few years ago. He wanted to be texting with the grand kids and his flip phone was just too much trouble. So he finally got a iPhone. Since then he has a Nook and recently a Galaxy Tab 4 8". And he just inherited my old iPad since I bought a new iPad Air 2 at BB Black Friday deals. So there's hope yet for yours.
