[QUOTE=jj2me]I have to assume you no longer have the Nook HD, as that could be used as your app-download-and-transfer device since the Nook HD should have the Google Play Store[QUOTE]
No I sold my Nook HD to a freind for £80 back in March. She emailed me the android ID with a screen shot of the Device ID app results so i'd know the ID was correct.
I had no issues downloading my free apps just not the paid one's.

Another option is to buy a cheap Android cell phone for use as a media player (depending, of course, on whether it would be something you would want)

The very cheapest I could get an Android cell phone would be £35 thats the LG 30. It has a three inch screen, my eyes are too old now to handle that small a size. I use my iphone and ipads for music and we have three ipad classics in the house.
After a bit of deliberation this morning I've bought the Asus Memo Pad 7 for £79, its on offer this weeked reduced from £120. It comes with 16GB but it will take an SD Card up to 64GB. Its a proper android tablet. I'll probably use this one for Calibre Companion and keep the Fire for the text to speech and Audible. Plus I can get three years insurance on it free. So all in it seemed a better deal than paying for a cheap phone i'll never use. I've paid just under £10 for a case and screen protector as well.
