Refurbished doesn't mean there was ever anything wrong with the eReader or other device. It simply means it was bought and returned. I remember one poster who claimed to have bought and returned 8 Paperwhites in a two-week period because they were all horrible. broken.
I love finding refurbished or open box deals. I was at a CompUSA and they had a row of laptops that had problems. I saw one for $100 with a note on it saying it wouldn't boot. This was years ago. I asked the clerk if I could open it and he shrugged and walked off. I reseated some of the cards, pushed the power button, and it booted just fine. I pointed it out to the clerk and he said, "It's still $100. If you don't want it, I do." I bought it.
