Yes, the above description is quite accurate. It's a bit discomfiting to realize that Elizabeth actually had to live these scenarios out herself, but the humor is entertaining nonetheless.
Actually, this book had me at the opening illustration (I don't know the source). It has always been an aspiration of mine to travel that way, a la Toad, if not floating down a river on a raft. Rather startling, though, to find that the Major was obliged to walk, rather than drive. Not how I had pictured it, either.
