This was my understanding as well. Amazon themselves made it sound very much as if they were not upgrading the HDX 7 this year.

To be fair practically all of the non-US Amazon store pages listed the new basic Kindle (7th gen.) as having a Carta display when it emphatically does not. The US Amazon page was practically the only one that did have it listed correctly. So a blunder is easily within the realm of possibility.

However, the Fire HDX 7 (2013) is completely out of stock right now, all storage sizes, so that is kinda suspicious. Sometimes that means Amazon has something planned, but sometimes it is a database thing... and sometimes it means it is really completely sold out (hard to believe) and sometimes it means absolutely nothing at all.
