Maybe that's why you're having issues accepting the Kindle screen? The lights on the Kindle do NOT shine out at the person reading, they are pointed down onto the reflective screen, and then the light is reflected back to the person reading. Therefore, it seems from what you're saying that it would be natural for the Kindle to have a gradient as well.
