My dad has a third generation Kindle. He kept complaining to me that when opened the Kindle up it would be in a totally different place in the book than where he left off. When I tried using the sync to last page read feature it would tell me it was already there. So I would clear out the last page read information on Amazon's Manage Your Device section.
He would read a bit, close the book, and then next time he opened it it would be in a totally different place.
Finally figured out that while holding the Kindle with the cover closed, the cover was pressing against the page turn buttons.
