Have you tried just 'waiting it out' (usually a few minutes)
Conversions are intensive, The computer is just in 'Go away kid, you bother me' mode and can't spare cycles to update the GUI. I see this all the time on my (XP) P4, 800FSB, 2G RAM. Less frequent on my W7 systems (not minimum RAM)

Taming your A/V active scan settings can help some (If you scanned the book when you added it to your computer, do you really need to scan it every time it gets touched?)
