Guy de Maupassant (1850-1893) was a French writer, considered one of the fathers of the modern short story, and it is in this genre where he excels, describing the people and society of his time with an elegant simplicity of style.
"Une vie", published in 1883, was his first novel. It tells the story of Jeanne, the daughter of a French aristocrat, since she leaves the convent at 17 years of age, to live in the "real world". Her hopes and fantasies are initially fulfilled, but she's later disappointed by the actual actual world and society.
