I ended up doing the factory reset. Cleared everything, reregistered, downloaded the most recent software. Tried loading on some books via wifi and it soon locked up. These are regular amazon ebooks. So, did another factory reset, reregistered, downloaded the most recent software. Then I shut off the wifi and sideloaded books. Clearly the wifi is not playing nice, but I can still use the unit. As mentioned, I have several other kindles, including another kindle keyboard that I inherited, so I'm not without options. Thanks all!
