The problem with these cards is that there are always fees involved. A fee to issue the card. A fee if the card needs to be replaced. Some charge monthly service fees. You've really got to read all of the fine print.

I gave my nieces Visa Buxx cards a few years ago, and I use them to give them money for the holidays. I believe they cost me $10 each to get the initial cards. This year one of them got compromised. While Visa gave back the amount in question, they did charge me $20 to reissue the card with a new number.
