In a lot of cases, the only refurbished bits is the hardware inside.
I have recently started buying stuff refurbished. Haven't tried an eReader yet, but bought my iPod Touch refurbished to save $100 on the bigger storage option. They specifically tell you that the shell and screen are new, but the inside bits aren't.
