Evince works reasonably well for PDF files, and gedit is good for text and source code. You can also try mupdf and Leafpad.

It will be a revolution if someone will compile a module for USB on-the-go and host mode. This way you can use keyboard and mouse, or connect USB pendrives directly on your Kobo.

It supports USB host now, there is an option in "Settings",you have to choose "Debian/USB Host" and reboot
