I am also looking at the Kindles. How do they compare to Kobo? I am in Canada, by the way. I only purchased books from Amazon or Kobo, by the way, since Sony store closed.

Well, I prefer Kobo, but I like to use my own font, and I like the customization of the Kobo, and I like to use Calibre to load and manage my books and collections.
You, however, stated that you don't care about any of that, and like to download directly from the site you buy from.
In that case, I'd say the Kindle Paperwhite 2 is the more reliable and easiest to use, with the better customer service. A Kindle is what I would buy for a relative who didn't use Calibre and was not familiar with ereaders. A Kindle is for the person who just wants to read, no tinkering required. I'm sure there are non-tinkerers who use Kobos as well.
Just my opinion. I consider the Kobo to be perfect for the advanced user. I got rid of all my eink Kindles and I have 5 eink Kobos. So I am a huge lover of the Kobo reader. But for a beginner, I recommend the Kindle.
