After being burnt by pdb and lit formats (thank you calibre for the ability to convert these) I would never buy an ebook I can't "clean" and store for use on any device I choose. It would be like purchasing a paper book I could only read in a single chair... if the chair was thrown out I could no longer reread it.

Kindle for PC IS an Amazon program that JSWolf was referring to as one of the options to be able to download from Amazon. You still don't need to own a Kindle, but you do need to download through one of Amazon's programs or Kindle apps. So you're still safe buying from Amazon and downloading through Kindle for PC, nothing there has changed.
