My Treo came with eReader. I downloaded some Jane Austen novels and other stuff more as a toy than anything else, but when my book group decided to read Fanny Burney's Cecilia (which is 900 pages in hard copy), I decided to try reading it on my Treo. And I loved everything about the experience. The portability, the ease of use, the fact that it was a free book and I didn't have to find a space for it on my overflowing bookshelves or worry about returning it to the library on time--everything was great.
But using a cellphone or smartphone you already have (and free public domain ebooks) is also a painless way to try out the technology.
