Linux mint is based off Ubuntu, just as newbie-friendly, with the advantage of a GUI which doesn't look vomit-worthy (IMHO ).
I took a look at Linux mint and liked what I saw - a lot. I was kind meh about Ubuntu at the time. Completely different feeling about LM. I like the look, etc. For better or worse, I like a decent GUI.
