Ubuntu has long been the most newbie-friendly distro. Meaning you can use it entirely via the GUI, and it looks nice and familiar to people with a Windows background.
Just in the last few years, what with the hugely unpopular GNOME3 debacle, and Ubuntu being no better with Unity...
A lot of people still recommend Ubuntu. Not me though.
Linux mint is based off Ubuntu, just as newbie-friendly, with the advantage of a GUI which doesn't look vomit-worthy (IM
