Johan Ernst Welhaven Sars (1835 – 1917) er en av de store skikkelsene i norsk historieforskning. Han var sønn av havforskeren Michael Sars, og bror av marinbiologen Ossian Sars og Eva Nansen, Fridtjof Nansens kone.
Hans "Udsigt..." er et av hovedverkene innenfor den norske historieskriving.
Boken er basert på epub-utgavene fra Nasjonalbiblioteket. De fire opprinnelige bind er slått sammen, fotnoter er hyperlenket, sideombrekking er fjernet, og 'aa' erstattet med 'å'.
