The average Brit (and I'm 100% Brit) feels guilty complaining. If we have a problem and someone who could fix it says 'How is everything?' we smile brightly and say 'Fine, thanks.' Once the potential fixer departs the scene we turn to our friend/family/colleague (basically anyone who'll listen) and complain loud and long till we've burned out our indignation ... which can take a very long time. There's a reason why the Australians have always called us 'whinging Poms'.
