An SD card slot on an Android tablet is pretty much only useful if you want to store movies or tons of music.

Your best bet is to get a tablet with 16 or 32 gb internal storage, and not worry about an external card slot.

Some tablets have the capability to read from USB drives. And there are wi-drives that can be used, as well, for example to stream a movie to your tablet.
