So the extra font file was definitely lost in the pre-processing stage before this kindlegen version was even run (at least according to this stored log file in the KDP generated mobi).

Hi, Kevin:
this correlates with what we have seen; when the KDP-build fails, the
font files are stripped, in toto, from the final .mobi file. Not some, or only one; all the font files get nuked.
Is there anything I could provide to you, privately, that might help you?
