It's not so much a matter of hosting services and companies using the domain names so much as the companies blocking critics from actively using them.
Like, no way does Ford let Fordcars.suck get used. So they sign up for it and squat on it. Either way, they pay the domain fee. That is money in the bank.
(They really shouldn't have authorized that one but ICANN needs money, so...)
Anyway, the banana domain would have lots of uses.
Republic.banana should be very popular, for example.
Creampie.banana.
Minion.banana.
Monkey.banana.
And the ever popular: banana.banana.
And those would be used, not just squated.
