Yes the icon will still be there. When you set brightness to zero turns the lights OFF (not just really dim).

One other comment that may help with consistency: I've found one of the keys is not to hesitate when you put your finger down to swipe (hesitating tends to cause it to start selecting text) and you really do have to be right against the left edge.
